1. How is the advertising world dominated by images of pop culture?

First and foremost, the meaning behind the phrase popular culture is when there is a new sense of simultaneous growth of popular culture, for example new popular celebrities, new trend and etc. The advertising world is dominated by images that have a retro-like design, bright and high saturated colors and are also the ‘picture perfect’ models. Most of the posters we have seen along Orchard road and Bugis have a certain retro-like design.

These two pictures are examples of what we meant retro-like design. What makes it a retro-like design is the circles. And we have seen a lot of these circles design on most of the posters along Orchard road and Bugis. They are usually very bright, vibrant and high in saturation. Thus It brings out the trend of colors used in posters and advertisement nowadays.
These designs and colors that are retro inspired can also be seen in the fashion and the trends of what the present people are wearing. A fashion show is also a way of advertising the product which are usually clothes. And current fashion shows are dominated by beautiful faces and very slim models which they name as size two.
And the advertising world for a fashion brand like Prada, Gucci, Victoria’s Secret and etc, are dominated by images of skiing and beautiful models and mostly popular and all these affects the trend of clothes people wear and also the desires that they like being as slim as the models, perfect hairs, perfect body and etc.

For example,

2. How does the images that you’ve seen(in the exhibition) apply in contemporary advertising?

The images that we have seen at the exhibition, uses primary colors, slim models and also beautiful faces, which also apply to the contemporary culture now. The colors used are very bright and saturated, like what some of the advertisement look like. The only distortion done to the portraits were the eyes but the rest were picture perfect. Maybe the portraits imply indirectly to the models. All models are pretty. They have perfect nose, perfect lips, perfect hair and beautiful eyes. However, the portraits’ distorted eyes may resemble the ugly side of the models which are not seen by the world. Thus, the images we have seen applies directly, through the color and the beautiful faces, and indirectly, through the message that it was trying to get at, in contemporary advertising.

3. How do you fit in the contemporary culture?

Contemporary culture refers to the culture we currently live in, example, the social, political, and economical climate, plus what we engage in today like the values. Thus, what we do today are what contemporary culture is all about. We are trend followers. As young adults, we are easily influenced by the current and upcoming trends in store for us. And this can be in a form of fashion, songs and music, design and colors. Thus, we buy clothes that are on trend right now such as the pop design and retro design t-shirt. Apart from buying, the use of language are also part of the contemporary culture. Some words are cool to use and examples can be vulgarities that are very common nowadays, the use of dude and yo and many more.

Pop songs are too old-fashioned and the new hip-hop beats are the trend nowadays. Thus, as trend followers, we get influence by the selection of songs and get easily addicted to this type of music that’s going around everywhere.

Why do images, pictures, art have a powerful impact on us?
- It's because images dominated our lives. Thay define us and also mould us. When we look at a certain peice of art, it may
change how we behave, feel and think.
- And also because some are beautifully and perfectly maed that it inspires us and changes the person we were.

Why is the modern world dominated by unrealistic images of the body?
- It started from the olden days of how different cultres made the images.
- The hunters lived in a harsh state where the women were fat, theu they bring out grotesque scultures.
- Eygtians create their images with a grid which brings out a little more realistic bpdy figure.
- Lastly, the Greeks were very full of themselves nd believe that the beautiful body is like a God's body.
- And the Eygptians and the Greeks combines to create a statue of a boy, which perfectly match a human body.
- But, the instinct that is hard wire into the brain of human can be overridden by culture.
- The statue of the boy was too realistic and boring.
- Therefore, the exaggerated parts of the body, like the muscles, bones and the way they stand to make it more appealing.

In conclusion, humans follow their culture than reality. And now as the modern would become more culturally diverse, the images will have a further changes.
